Guide to Desktop Computers

Desktops available today are commonly used as :

  • All In One Computers
  • Small Business Computers

It is difficult to survive in the modern world without a computer today. Everybody needs access to email and internet, office tools, online shopping, information search. Also basic desktop models are very cheap today. You can get a reasonably powerful, brand new desktop computer for under $500. Also these are strong computing machines and will last you for years if you take good care of them.

So if you are able to use a computer, without the requirement for portablity (because it is difficult to carry around a desktop computer unlike a laptop), then a desktop computer is a good choice. The larger monitor and keyboard will make it easier to use. Also you can start with a basic desktop computer model and add on parts later when you need them or have the money to buy them. For example, if you have used your desktop computer for a year and you need additional space to store more information (pictures, movies, text files etc...), you can simply add another hard drive. If you kids like games and the latest games use advanced graphic processors simply add a new graphics card to your machine. To add most devices you need not do anything because all desktop computers come with several built-in USB ports. When you buy a new device, such as a printer or a scanner, simply plug-in the new device to your desktop computer via the USB port and the new device immediately becomes usable!

You can even purchase computer parts and assemble your own computer. Most desktop computers include the following parts:

  • Hard Drives
  • CPU or Processor which includes :
    • Power supply
    • Motherboard
    • RAM
  • Monitor (LCD or CRT)
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • CD / DVD drives
  • Various cables and UPS (for power backup)
  • Printers, Speakers, etc...
After you build your desktop computer, you will need an operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP or Vista. You should also install anti-virus software to protect your computer from adware, malware and other viruses. Most people also install office tools and other software as per their needs.
